By 1991, Rodriguez decided to make a teaser short for From Dusk Till Dawn, designed to drum up interest from potential backers. Robert Rodriguez would finally get his first feature made in 1993, El Mariachi, which immediately got the notice of Hollywood, leading to 1995 studio-backed follow-up Desperado. Years before From Dusk Till Dawn got made, Rodriguez shot a teaser that was intended to get the projected funded with writing from Quentin Tarantino, and that teaser starred Joe Pilato as Seth, who horror fans will know best as Day of the Dead's scene-stealing villain Captain Rhodes. However, while it's hard to imagine anyone but Clooney as Seth, he wasn't the original actor cast in the role. ![]() He's just as good when playing a robber on the run from the law as he is once things go sideways and vampires show up. Slightly before those more mainstream films though, Clooney first showed off his ability to serve as the charismatic lead of a movie in 1996's crime/horror hybrid From Dusk Till Dawn, directed by Robert Rodriguez. It wasn't until the late 1990s and early 2000s that Clooney really began to break out as a leading man, thanks to hits like Out of Sight, The Perfect Storm, and Ocean's Eleven, which itself spawned a franchise.
